The art of great goal setting
The most famous goal setting method is ‘SMART’. Goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timelines. It’s a great tool. However, Michael Hyatt, author of , advises to go beyond SMART and do SMARTER. Let’s take a look at how to set SMARTER goals.
Specific
A goal is more likely to be successful when it is clear and specific. Don’t write abstractly, write clearly so that anyone can understand. According to practical behavioral theories, clarity and specificity prompt action.

Measurable
The more quantifiable the process of achieving the goal, the better. You can make a proper assessment when you can see the current situation very objectively. Great strategies come from being able to evaluate properly.
Actionable
When writing a goal, it is better to end with a verb rather than a noun, preferably with a strong verb. Rather than ‘reading’, ‘let’s read’ or ‘read unconditionally!’ inspires activity.
Risky
As for the goal, the bigger the vision with some risk, the better. Of course, this is only if the person is motivated to some extent. A person whose lethargy reigns does well to achieve small goals without risk. However, for those who are motivated, the bigger the risk, the higher the goal achievement rate. Setting a goal is the beginning of passion, so let’s set a big goal with plenty of risk.
Time-keyed
There are two time standards. When will the goal be achieved?, When will the goal be executed? Both are important. Deadlines and clear execution times are both twins that help you achieve your goals. Make good use of time standards.
Exciting
Goals should be attractive. If you feel excited when you think about the process of achieving your goal and the result, you can move forward without getting tired even if there are obstacles in the middle. An attractive goal is a powerful motivator in itself. How exciting are my goals? The more exciting you are, the higher your goal achievement rate will be.
Relevant
A great goal should fit right into your life. No matter how attractive a goal may be, is it really the right goal if you go to it without taking care of your wife and children? Or what if that attractive goal conflicts with my other goals? What if the goal is beyond my available time? You shouldn’t sacrifice your life for your goals. The goal is to be there to help with life. The core of SMARTER goal setting in is number 7. We hope that your life will become more SMARTER through SMARTER goal setting.
